"If you can make it back to the gate and behind the fence before he opens the door, you’ll be lucky," Leo said, leaning against the brick wall of the alleyway.
The neighborhood was the kind of place where the lawns were trimmed to exactly two inches and the silence was deafening. Most of the houses were identical mid-century builds with peeling white trim, but the property at 42 stood out. It had a heavy iron gate and a gravel driveway that crunched under foot, breaking the calm of the street. The owner, Mr Johnson, didn't believe in welcoming committees or wind chimes. He lived his life by a strict internal clock and a set of rules that seemed to govern the whole plot. He walked with a rigid, military precision, his spine a straight line that never seemed to bend, even when he sat on his chair on the porch. The ex-prison warden was a formidable man, even in retirement.
"Reckon I can," Maya whispered, like a naughty schoolgirl, her voice barely audible over the sudden thrum of her own heart.
“Tell you what. If you can make it three in a row, I’ll pay for the cinema tickets tonight.”
Maya eyed-up the distance from Mr Johnson’s porch to the ivy-covered fence at the end of the pathway. The fence was tall enough, if she crouched low, to keep her out of sight from the door as she made her way back to the alleyway beyond. Roughly twenty feet of exposed gravel to negotiate. She felt a surge of adrenaline. It was a childish game but nonetheless exciting.
“Deal.”
She didn't wait for Leo to change his mind. With a sudden burst of speed, she set off, opened the gate and darted up the path, the gravel displacing beneath her trainers. She reached the door, pressed the bell with a decisive *click*, and pivoted on her heel, sprinting back down the drive, closing the gate, ducking behind the fence and back to the alleyway just as the heavy deadbolt of the door groaned open.
She collapsed against the brick wall next to Leo, gasping for air and grinning wildly. She felt like a 14 year old, not like a young lady who had turned 18 three weeks before. Through the gap in the hedge, she saw Mr Johnson step out onto the porch. He didn't yell; he simply stood there, his grey eyes scanning the empty driveway with the cold, calculated efficiency of a man who spent thirty years managing high-security wings in the local prison. He looked less like a retiree and more like a predator who had just missed a very small, very fast rabbit. He closed the door with a singular, echoing thud.
"He didn't even see me," Maya breathed, her chest heaving as she looked up at Leo. The victory felt electric, a sharp spike of triumph that made the risk feel worth it. Leo was grinning, though there was a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. Mr Johnson, by reputation, was not a man to be trifled with. The silence returned, heavier than before, settling over the neighborhood like a shroud.
The second attempt was almost too easy. Maya waited for the exact moment Mr Johnson retreated inside to deaden the lock, then sprinted again, the gravel again crunching under her feet. This time, she didn't just ring the bell; she gave it a lingering press, a defiant challenge to the man’s patience. She dove back into the alleyway just as the door flew open with a violent crash of wood against the stopper. Mr Johnson didn't step out this time; he simply stood in the frame, his face a mask of stern discipline, his eyes narrowing as he searched the shadows at the end of the front garden. He knew someone had been there. He could smell her scent and the adrenaline of excitement.
"One more," Leo whispered, his voice a mixture of terror and excitement.
"One more and the tickets are mine, and I get to pick the movie." Mayla giggled.
She didn’t need any further incentive. The thrill had become a physical weight in her stomach, a magnet pulling her toward the heavy oak door. She waited for the house to settle, for the silence to become absolute. Then, she moved. This time, she didn’t sprint; she crept, her trainers barely skimming the gravel as she navigated the perimeter of the porch. She reached out, her finger trembling slightly as it pressed the bell. She didn't pivot immediately. For a heartbeat, she lingered, savoring the silence of the house, convinced she had mapped the timing of his movements.
The heavy oak door didn’t groan this time; it flew open with the sudden, violent force of a trap snapping shut. Maya pivoted to run, but her trainer caught on the edge of a loose floorboard, sending her stumbling forward with a sharp gasp. Before she could recover her balance, a hand as firm and unyielding as a vice clamped around her upper arm. The grip wasn't chaotic or panicked; it was calculated. A professional hold that neutralized her momentum instantly.
"Third time is the killer," Mr Johnson’s voice boomed, his tone devoid of warmth but ringing with a terrifyingly familiar authority.
The grip on her arm didn't loosen as he steered her across the threshold of number 42. Maya glanced back toward the alleyway, catching a glimpse of Leo, who had frozen in place, his face pale. He looked as if he wanted to step forward, but the sheer presence of Mr Johnson, shoulders squared, jaw set like granite, acted as a physical barrier. The door closed behind them with a finality and Leo looked on in horror. She was gone.
The closing of the door echoed through the hallway, cutting off the sounds of the neighborhood and leaving Maya in a space that felt less like a home and more like an intake centre.
Mr Johnson didn't drag her; he simply marched her toward the living room with a steady, relentless pace. The house was as austere as the man himself: polished mahogany floors, heavy velvet curtains drawn tight, a clock on the mantle that ticked with a rhythmic, punishing precision and a velvet sofa that looked plush and soft. The living room door closed behind them.
They stopped in the middle of the room, his eyes scanning her with a stern, disapproving intensity.
"A game of mischief, is it?" he asked, though it wasn't really a question. "In my experience, children who seek the thrill of the chase usually find the destination far less amusing than they anticipated."
"I… I… I was just playing a game," Maya stammered like a little child, her voice sounding small and fragile in the cavernous silence of the room. She tried to pull her arm back, but the hold remained firm, a steady pressure that signaled she wasn't going anywhere until he decided he was finished.
Mr Johnson didn't look angry in the way Leo or her dad got angry. There was no shouting or frantic gesturing. Instead, he possessed a terrifyingly calm resolve, the kind of stillness that comes from decades of commanding prisoners who had little left to lose. He let go of her arm only to point toward a heavy, high-backed wooden chair.
"Stand there. Feet together. Hands behind your back," he commanded. The tone was clipped, leaving no room for negotiation.
Maya hesitated, her eyes darting toward the door, but the distance felt like a mile of impossible terrain. She stepped toward the chair, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. As she complied, Mr Johnson circled her once, his footsteps echoing with a rhythmic, heavy thud. He stopped behind her, and she felt the sudden, sharp shift in the air as he stepped closer.
"You’ve spent the evening treating my home like a playground," Mr Johnson said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, resonant rumble. "The problem with games, Maya, is that eventually the rules change."
He didn't wait for her to respond. In one swift movement, he sat on the heavy oak chair with a deliberate thud, his posture remaining as straight as a fence post. The chair groaned under his weight, a sturdy piece of furniture that seemed designed for the kind of permanence he embodied., He reached out and gripped her waist, hoisting her up and over his lap. The transition was so swift it left her breathless, her world suddenly tilting until she was draped facedown across his sturdy thighs. Maya let out a small, startled yelp of surprise. Her legs dangled as she felt the rough fabric of his trousers beneath her. She tried to squirm, but his forearm pressed firmly across the small of her back, pinning her in place with an immovable weight.
She had been dressed for a summer evening and a cinema date, wearing a pair of thin, cotton shorts and a cropped white T-shirt. The cotton would offer little protection from the stern discipline that was about to be administered.
"Hold still," he commanded, his voice vibrating through his legs and into her chest. He didn't give her time to adjust or protest. With a swift, practiced motion, he reached back and gave her a sharp, resounding smack across the seat of her shorts. The sound was like a gunshot in the quiet room, a sudden explosion of noise that made Maya jump. The shock of it was more than the sting; it was the realization that the game had truly ended and a very different set of rules had taken over.
"Naughty girls need a proper lesson," Mr Johnson remarked, his voice as dry as parchment. "However, a lesson filtered through fabric, even as thin as this, is a lesson wasted."
Before Maya could even process the words, she felt his large, calloused hand hook into the elastic waistband of her shorts. With a single, efficient tug that brooked no resistance, he pulled them down. With her shorts by her knees, her thin, skimpy pale blue knickers were exposed. They were so lacking in material that quite a lot of her backside could feel the cool, stagnant air of the living room. The suddenness of it left her feeling utterly vulnerable, her skin prickling as she felt the shift in the room's atmosphere. She gave a sharp, reflexive kick and wriggle, but his forearm remained a leaden weight across her lower back, anchoring her firmly in place.
Mr Johnson looked down at the lack of fabric. “No need for these to come down,” he smirked. “They will offer little protection.”
The next smack landed with a heavy slap on her right cheek. It seemed to vibrate through Maya’s entire skeleton. It wasn’t the sharp, stinging snap of a switch, but a deep, booming impact that drove the air from her lungs. She gasped, her fingers curling into the fabric of his trousers. It had begun. Mr Johnson delivered a rhythmic, methodical chastisement, his hand descending with the precision of a metronome, alternating between each cheek. *Smack. Pause. Smack.* He didn’t rush; he treated the task like a professional audit, ensuring every square inch of her backside was accounted for.
As time ticked by on the mantel clock, the sensation shifted. The initial shock faded into a searing, radiating heat that began to bloom across her skin. The pale cheeks, once the color of cream, deepened into a flushed pink as the blood rushed to the surface. Mr Johnson’s hand was relentless, alternating between the center of her cheeks and the sensitive undersides, ensuring the discipline was evenly distributed. Maya found herself sobbing, not out of terror, but from the sheer, overwhelming intensity of the sensation. Every time she tried to squirm away from the heat, his forearm tightened across her back, pinning her more firmly against his thigh, her knickers riding into the crease of her bottom to leave her bottom exposed.
Maya continued to wriggle as the pain increased. In frantic, instinctive surges of movement, she arched her back and kicked her legs, twisting her hips with a desperate energy. The shorts, which had been round her knees, dropped further down her slim long legs and got tangled around her trainers. Eventually they dropped to the floor, leaving her legs free.
She didn't care about the modesty of the situation anymore; the embarrassment that had simmered in her chest just moments ago was incinerated by the roaring fire spreading across her skin. She was no longer a girl playing a prank; she was being subjected to the absolute authority of a man who viewed discipline as a science.
The smacks continued to land with a raw, skin-on-skin impact that sounded like a whip cracking in a tiled room. Maya let out sharp, strangled cries, her legs drumming a frantic rhythm in the air. The heat was no longer just a glow; it was a pulsing, living thing, a deep throbbing ache that seemed to synchronize with the ticking of the mantel clock. She squeezed her eyes shut, focusing entirely on the white-hot center of each strike, letting the sensation consume every other thought until there was nothing left in the world but the rhythmic descent of that heavy hand.
For what seemed like an age the rhythmic, unrelenting impact had reduced Maya’s defiance to a series of ragged, incoherent sounds. The room had vanished, leaving her trapped in a sensory loop where the only reality was the heavy thud of skin meeting skin and the agonizingly slow passage of time. She was no longer fighting him; she was simply enduring, her body vibrating with every impact. She let out low, guttural grunts with every blow, her breath coming in sharp, unregulated gasps. Her fingers were white-knuckled, clutching the fabric of his trousers as if they were the only thing keeping her from floating away into a haze of stinging heat.
By the time Mr Johnson finally stopped, Maya’s backside was no longer pink; it had deepened into a vivid red. The skin felt tight and swollen, radiating a fierce warmth that seemed to pulse in time with her heartbeat. She hung across his lap, her chest heaving, a mixture of sweat and tears tracking paths down her face. Her legs gave a final, pathetic little twitch, but the strength to kick had burned out, replaced by a heavy, numb exhaustion that made her feel as though she were made of lead.
"Stand up," Mr Johnson commanded, his voice returning to that clipped, administrative tone. He didn't offer a hand to help her, he waited for her to struggle upward from his lap. Her legs felt like jelly, and as she stood, the cool air of the room hit her inflamed skin, causing a violent shiver to ripple through her entire frame. She reached instinctively to pick up her shorts from the floor, but a sharp glance from those grey eyes stopped her mid-motion.
"Not yet," he directed, pointing a stern finger toward the far corner of the room, where the mahogany walls met in a sharp, ninety-degree angle. "You will go to that corner and wait. Hands on your head, elbows wide. You will stay exactly as you are, your well spanked bottom on view, until you have composed yourself and had time to think about why you are standing there."
The walk to the corner was a precarious journey of a few short steps, her bare skin tingling with an electric heat. Maya obeyed, her fingers trembling as she locked them behind her head, elbows flared wide. She stood there, shivering, the silence of the room amplifying the sound of her own disjointed breathing. She felt small, stripped of every shred of teenage bravado, while Mr Johnson moved with a slow, predatory deliberation toward the mahogany sideboard. He didn't look back at her; he simply reached for a long, heavy piece of tanned leather that had been resting atop the polished wood. The prison strap was wide and thick, with a heavy buckle and a surface that looked as though it had seen decades of uncompromising service. He smiled as the thoughts of previous disciplinary procedures at the local prison came to mind. The strap had indeed seen good service and he had kept it as a memento of his 30 years’ service to the county.
"Now, Maya, the hand was for the mischief," Mr Johnson announced, the leather strap giving a low, ominous creak as he tested its flexibility. "This strap,” he showed it to her as she turned to face him, “was the one I used at the borstal on those who persistently offended. Three times you sought to deceive me. Three times you thought the rules didn't apply to you. So you are due three strokes of the strap.”
He didn't send her back to the chair. Instead, he gestured toward the heavy, velvet-upholstered sofa. "Bend over the arm of my sofa, Maya. Now."
Maya stumbled forward, her heart hammering against her ribs. Unable to speak, she grunted and looked at him with pleading eyes. She gripped the plush velvet of the sofa arm, bending her waist until her torso was parallel to the floor. The position pushed her hips high into the air, presenting her sore backside as a target. She barely had time to settle before the first stroke of the strap descended.
*Whack!*
The sound was different from the hand; it was a sharp, cracking report that echoed like a gunshot through the sterile silence of the room. Maya let out a piercing howl, her body arching violently. The strap didn't just hit the surface; it seemed to bite deep, sending a shockwave of white-hot agony through her already inflamed skin. Her legs kicked up and down instinctively, drumming a frantic, desperate rhythm against the polished wooden floor.
*Whack!*
The second stroke landed a fraction of an inch below the first, the heavy leather biting into the tender curve where her backside met her thighs. Maya’s scream was truncated into a choked sob, her fingers digging deeply into the velvet cushions her face buried there, ashamed. The pain was no longer a radiating glow; it was a focused, piercing electricity that seemed to sear through her nerves. She tried to twist her hips away, a desperate, instinctive attempt to shield herself and in so doing she crumpled, her head went down into the sofa and Mr Johnson’s hand clamped onto the small of her back with the force of a hydraulic press, pinning her flat against the sofa arm, her forehead buried in the cushions of the velvet of the sofa, her bottom once again sticking as she knelt there.
*Whack!*
The third and final stroke was delivered with a devastating precision, slicing through the air with a sinister hiss before connecting with the lower parts of her cheeks; the sound like a wet towel hitting a marble floor. Maya’s vision blurred, the world dissolving into a kaleidoscopic whirl of red and white. The strap didn't just sting; it felt as though a line of liquid fire had been drawn across her skin, the heat so intense it seemed to fuse the leather to her flesh for a split second before it snapped back. She felt her muscles seize in a reflexive spasm, her breath a sobbing gasp that rattled in her throat. Each individual strike of the prison strap seemed to amplify the previous ones, building a crescendo of agony that left her gasping for air that wouldn't come.
"Three strokes," Mr Johnson announced, his voice as cold and precise as a gavel. He paused, letting the silence of the room settle over Maya’s shaking frame. He looked down at the vivid, swollen landscape of her backside, where the heavy leather had left deep, overlapping welts of crimson. "Three strokes, one for each time you rang my doorbell, uninvited, with mischief and intent to inconvenience. You were persistent, Maya. Persistence without purpose is merely provocation."
Maya’s breath was shallow, her forehead still buried in the depths of the sofa. The heat in her skin felt like a living thing, pulsing in synchronization with the throb of her heartbeat. She didn't move, not out of obedience, but because the mere thought of shifting her hips felt like an invitation to a new wave of agony. The room felt smaller now, the air heavy with the scent of old mahogany and the lingering echo of the strap.
"Now," Mr Johnson returned to the sideboard and let the leather strap drop with a dull thud onto the shiny surface. "Do you believe the game is over?"
Maya let out a broken, shuddering sob, her fingers clutching the velvet. "Yes, sir," she choked out, the words barely a whisper. "Yes, sir. I'm sorry. I won't do it again. I promise."
The tension in the room shifted. The predatory stillness that had defined Mr Johnson’s presence softened, if only by a fraction. As she lifted her head to look at him, he gestured toward the door with a stiff, formal movement. "Well, see that you don't. A third lesson is rarely as educational as the first but often more painful."
With shaking hands, Maya eased herself up, re-arranged her knickers which had proved hopeless in protecting her bottom from hand and strap, and scrabbled around, picking up her shorts and pulling them up slowly over her bottom. The fabric felt abrasive against her swollen skin, each movement eliciting a sharp hiss of pain that made her wince. She didn't look back at him as she hurried toward the door, her gait awkward and wide-legged, her face flushed and as red as her bottom. By the time she stepped out onto the gravel driveway and pulled the heavy iron gate shut behind her, the cool evening air felt like a benediction against her burning skin.
Mr Johnson returned to his book. “I have not lost the touch,” he chuckled to himself. He was pleased with his work.
Leo was waiting by the alleyway, looking like he had aged ten years in the last 20 minutes. He jumped as she approached, his eyes wide with a mixture of guilt and curiosity.
"Maya! Are you okay? What happened? I mean, you were in there for so long."
Maya didn't answer immediately. She leaned against the brick wall, her breath still coming in jagged pieces, and slowly turned around. With a tentative, pained expression, she lowered her shorts and knickers just enough to give him a good glimpse of her chastised bottom. Leo gasped, his jaw dropped. The pale skin of her backside had been replaced by an angry-looking map of crimson, the overlapping welts from the strap standing out in stark, angry relief against the deep flush of the initial hand spanking. It looked as if she had been branded several times over. She sobbed and pulled her knickers and shorts back up.
"A thorough hand spanking and three strokes with the prison strap, Leo," Maya whispered, her voice raspy from sobbing. "That's what he gave me. He didn't just catch me, Leo. He... he really taught me a lesson."
Leo’s face crumbled into a mask of genuine remorse. The thrill of the dare had vanished, replaced by the sight of the physical toll his suggestion had taken on her.
"Oh God, Maya. I'm so sorry. I didn't think he'd actuall…" He stopped, realizing that ‘thinking’ was irrelevant now. He reached out to touch her arm, his expression soft and apologetic. "Let me make it up to you. Forget the bet. I'm paying for everything. The cinema tickets, the largest bucket of popcorn they have; whatever you want."
Maya let out a small, shaky laugh that turned into a wince as she shifted her weight. "You're going to have to buy me a lot more than popcorn to make up for this," she murmured, though the anger had mostly dissolved into a heavy, throbbing exhaustion.
The walk back to her house was a slow, careful procession. Every step felt like a gamble with the pain. She walked with a strange gait to minimize the friction, which would have been comical in other circumstances. Leo walked beside her, hovering attentively, occasionally offering a steadying hand when she stumbled.
When they finally reached her front porch, Leo paused, looking back toward the iron gate of 402. The house stood silent and imposing, a fortress of rigid order that had just chewed up and spat out a reckless eighteen-year-old.
"I can't believe he still had his prison strap," Leo whispered, his voice filled with a newfound respect. ‘Who even uses those anymore?’ he thought to himself.
Maya leaned against the doorframe, feeling the dull, rhythmic throb of her skin. She knew that tonight, the bedsheets would feel like sheets of fire, and the simple act of sitting down would be a challenge of endurance. The lesson had been delivered with a precision that left no room for doubt; Mr Johnson didn't believe in warnings, only in results.
The following day, Leo showed up at her house with a large tub of gourmet popcorn and a handful of movie ticket vouchers, looking like a puppy seeking forgiveness. Maya greeted him and they went through to the living room. She was wearing just an oversized pajama shirt and moved slowly so that it didn't press too hard against her skin. She hadn’t bothered with knickers as pulling them up would have been agony; she had spent the night sleeping on her tummy and every glance in a mirror sent a shiver through her whole body.
"Are we good for the cinema tonight?" Leo asked, holding up the tickets with a hopeful grin.
Maya looked at the tickets, then looked at the sofa, and then felt a sudden, vivid memory of the prison strap’s impact. She instinctively shifted her weight, a small wince crossing her face as her backside brushed against the fabric of her shirt. The pain was still there but it was slowly being replaced by a heavy, throbbing ache and a strange warmth. The skin remained so tender that even a gentle breeze felt like a provocation.
"You're lucky I like you," Maya said, taking the tickets. "But the cinema? Tonight? Leo, I can't even sit on a pillow right now without feeling like I've been branded. I’m not sitting in a theatre seat for two hours. Maybe sometime next year!”
